Rushcombe Pioneers Orienteering for Local Primary Schools

Rushcombe First School has hosted an introduction to orienteering course for teachers from local schools.

Visiting teachers were introduced to a range of activities that will see children from school Year 1 to Year 4 challenged both physically and mentally.

Rushcombe teacher Stuart McCormick has already laid out a new trail with special orienteering features in the school’s grounds with help from Dorset Works and Dorset Outdoor Education Service.

Children follow a special map to find secret markers hidden around the grounds.

Mr McCormick said: “There are a range of activities for Years 1–4 to help children develop their skills of observation and co-ordination. By the time children reach Year 4 they should be able to navigate themselves to different locations on the map to find all the hidden markers.”

They start by following string trails, then move on to making their own maps, handle classroom orienteering challenges and solve a photo orienteering trail before attempting the outdoor course.

Rushcombe plans to develop its school ground for orienteering and other new initiatives.
