More children are cycling and scooting to Rushcombe First School to reduce traffic congestion, thanks to new covered cycle racks.
The Corfe Mullen school installed the racks to help reduce driving to school for parents who live nearby and also to encourage healthier lifestyles in children.
Previously, parents who accompanied children cycling to school would have to carry the bikes back, or lock them up outside the school, which wasn’t as secure.
Now Rushcombe has seen a massive increase in the numbers of pupils cycling and scooting to school, and nearly every day the bike rack is full of around 25 bicycles and 30 scooters.
One of the pupils said: “The covered area keeps our bikes dry, so if it is wet, they can stay there overnight, and we can pick them up the following day. Now the bikes are kept dry, we can ride more.”
Acting headteacher Leonie Fawcett said: “We run a ‘Walk to School Week’ every term and generally encourage parents to explore the healthy living aspect of life in walking and cycling to school.
“It’s beginning to reduce car congestion and is therefore better for the environment too!”
