AFRICAN TEACHER VISITS RUSHCOMBE FIRST SCHOOL

A teacher from Malawi visited Rushcombe First School in Corfe Mullen to explain about life in Africa and explore cultural links between the two schools.

And she was impressed with the intelligent questions asked by even the youngest pupils.

Mercy Kachumba, who teaches at Mdzobwe Community Day School in rural Malawi, said: “Even children in Reception were asking searching questions about life in Malawi and the difference in lifestyles of children their age. In Malawi children of that age are more shy.

“And I was very impressed with the way teachers engaged so well with children and used every minute to draw the best from them. They were very friendly and active in the classroom.”

The pupils in Mercy’s class in Mdzobwe sit on grass mats because the school cannot afford desks and chairs and have very few books.

She teaches up to 95 pupils on her own in one small room, which is more than three times the class size in Rushcombe.

Mercy and her husband Laston, a church pastor, addressed Rushcombe’s whole school assembly and visited every class in the school.

They taught children an African song and Year 2 pupils performed three songs and dances of their own.

They were staying at the home of Jan Dowding, a former Rushcombe staff member, who visited them in Malawi last year.
